Gastrointestinal myoelectric and nodose ganglion activity recordings during vagus nerve stimulation

Study Purpose: This study sought to determine how vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) affects activity of the nodose ganglion and GI myoelectric activity in anesthetized and awake ferrets.
Data Collection: This dataset includes GI myoelectric activity recordings collected by multielectrode arrays on the stomach and intestine and nodose ganglion activity recordings collected by a multielectrode array inserted into the nodose.
Primary Conclusions: Not stated.
Curator's Notes
Experimental Design: Nodose ganglion activity was recorded in anesthetized ferrets using a multielectrode array inserted into either the left or right nodose ganglion. GI myoelectric activity was recorded with 4 or 6 4-contact planar electrodes placed on the serosal surface of the GI tract, from gastric fundus to duodenum. Vagus nerve stimulation was applied using a bipolar cuff electrode on either the ventral or dorsal abdominal vagus nerve. GI myoelectric activity was recorded from 3 awake and behaving ferrets using 6 2-contact planar electrodes on the serosal surface of the GI tract, from gastric fundus to duodenum. VNS was applied using a 2-contact cuff electrode on the abdominal vagus nerve. Nodose ganglion and GI activity data were collected using the Ripple Grapevine Neural Interface Processor.Experiments included nodose ganglion recordings (n=6), chronic ventral implant recordings (n=3), and fiber pulling experiments (n=7).
Completeness: This dataset is part of a larger study: "Vagal neuromodulation of gastrointestinal nodose ganglionic pathways in the ferret."
Subjects & Samples: Female (n=1), male (n=16) ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) aged 90-217 days were used in this study.
Primary vs derivative data: Primary data is organized by subject folders containing Spike2 recording files, including separated fiber bundle recordings for 7 animals (sub-F45-18, sub-F46-18, sub-F49-18, sub-F50-18, sub-F61-18, sub-F62-18, sub-F63-18). Derivative data includes fiber bundle analysis files with waveform detection, sorting, and cleaned neural recordings in multiple formats (.smrx, .nex5, .plx, .csv). See README for detailed file naming conventions and processing workflow.
Code Availability: Post-hoc analysis code for fiber pulling experiments is provided in the code folder. For instructions, refer to the .md files in the protocols folder.
Important Notes: The protocols folder contains detailed experimental protocols for electrical stimulation testing, gastric distension experiments, and perfusion fixation procedures. The folder also includes analysis environment setup instructions and analysis steps documentation for data filtering and processing.
